Po patnácti letech se objevuje jako doktor Antekirt a vydává se po stopě udavačů, které hodlá náležitě potrestat. Román je poctou dílu Hrabě Monte Christo Alexandra Dumase staršího, kterého Verne považoval za svůj vzor a svoji knihu mu i věnoval. Podobně jako hrabě z původního díla je i doktor Antekirt velmi bohatý, což mu slouží k dosažení pomsty.

Budeme svědky napínavého příběhu odehrávajícího se v Indii roku 1867. Inženýr Banks pozve plukovníka Munroa, kapitána Hooda a Francouze Mauclera na výpravu po severních částech Indie. Jako dopravní prostředek jim má sloužit obrovský ocelový slon poháněný parním strojem, původně vyrobený pro bohatého rádžu. Verne líčí v románu nejen zeměpisné a přírodní zajímavosti, ale je tu i dobrodružná zápletka – plukovník Munroe hodlá pomstít smrt své ženy.

„Stoupáme, nebo klesáme?“ „Něco horšího, pane Smithi! Padáme!“ Slova, která zná každý čtenář verneovek. Přes okraj koše letí vše, co něco váží, přesto jsou všechny pokusy zastavit sestup marné. Z vojáků severoamerické Unie, kterým se podařilo uprchnout ze zajetí v balonu, se rázem stávají trosečníci. Pětice, která se po nedobrovolném přistání na neznámém ostrově snaží najít všemožné prostředky k přežití, zjistí, že jejich útočiště skrývá i nejedno tajemství.
