The humanities are a vital and necessary portion of any education. In some ways they are as traditional as you can get but in other ways they are always engaging and evolving with our 21st century world. Often the humanities are the site of controversy. Too often they are oversimplified in the media. At Allendale Columbia School, we take the humanities seriously. In this podcast, Director of AC’s Center for Humanities Vincent Bissonette interviews teachers at AC and beyond in order to learn more about what the humanities mean, why they are important, and what’s actually happening

The Brite Star Health & Safety books follow the class as they learn about health and safety. In Smart Shopping, the class gets an assignment that takes them to the supermarket where they learn about eating right and shopping smart.

The Brite Star Money and Finance series is intended to give kids a basic understanding and appreciation for the banking system, managing money, and reports needed to manage a simple business. In Banker Nat, the class gets a visit from the manager of the local bank, Banker Nat. Banker Nat teaches the class about the function and importance to the community of a bank.

The Bus Bunch is a group of kids who live in Brite Star and attend Brite Star School. They have become friends as they all ride the same bus to school each day.

In Sun, Moon, and Stars, the Brite Star Kids learn about the relationship between the Sun and Earth. Through an interesting science experiment, the lesson is driven home in a way that is sure to be remembered.

The Brite Star Money and Finance series is intended to give kids a basic understanding and appreciation for the banking system, managing money, and reports needed to manage a simple business. In Magic Money, Alex and Liz get a firsthand introduction to their local bank. They learn about saving, interest, loans, and more. They come away excited about managing their own finances.

In Danger Zone, the Bus Bunch get a scare and then learn valuable lessons from Officer Dan about precautions they can take and rules they should follow to be safe while riding the bus.

In Everyone Is Special, a new student arrives who is in a wheelchair. The Bus Bunch quickly learn that not everyone is the same, but every person is special and the new student is quickly accepted for who she is.

The Four Sisters books feature four sisters who grow up in a loving home. Like all siblings, they have their issues, but in the end they stand together. The Four Sisters stories are intended to teach and reinforce positive relationships and help develop the living skills children need to grow into responsible adults. In The Brite Star Fall Tennis Classic, the girls get a lesson in being a good sport, and Whit shows them all what a champion she is.

In World Expo Day, the Bus Bunch takes a field trip to the World Expo, and they learn about different people and their cultures.

In Proud Americans, the Brite Star Kids learn about the history of the American flag and how to show it respect.

How the Brite Star Kids Got Their Name teaches the importance of being kind and getting along with others. As the Brite Star Kids go through their normal activities at the daycare center, acts of kindness are recognized and rewarded.

In Let's Have a Party, the Brite Star Kids learn an important lesson about giving back and realize the decisions they make impact others. They make a classroom project out of throwing a party for those who help out in their community.

A Classroom Surprise introduces the Brite Star Kids to three people who serve their community. The class gets a first-hand look at the jobs of fireman, policeman, and nurse.
