In 1856-57 Frederick Law Olmsted took a saddle trip through Texas to see the area and report on its lands and peoples. His description of the Lone Star State is one of the most outstanding books about the American West ever published. Based on firsthand observation and backed by research, Olmsted's text captures the customs and cultures of the Texans in an engaging way.

The year is 2059, and the country is prospering technologically and socially. There is very little crime; the educational system is superb, and the government is seemingly uncorrupt. So why do terrorists continue to attack government institutions and innocent people? What do these people want? The answer: freedom.

In this speech of 1848, the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass makes an eloquent call for self-reliance. He points out that prejudice becomes powerless in the presence of industry, sobriety, and honesty combined with intelligence and self-respect. "There is gold in the earth, but we must dig it", says Douglass in reference to character which is attainable, and each must attain it for himself.

In this 1847 speech of Douglass to the American Anti-Slavery Society, he states that slavery is such a gigantic crime that every opportunity ought to be used to expose it. He defends his call for aid in England to help bring about the end of the evil practice.

The author whisks the listener to Central America to experience the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of a group of visionaries who carved a commercial empire out of virtually uninhabited Central American tropical jungles. These American businessmen and the people who worked for them were the early pioneers. They overcame tropical disease, financial problems, weather, and other obstacles by innovation and sheer grit.

The essay "The Destiny of Colored Americans" was first published in The North Star, the abolitionist newspaper of Frederick Douglass. It sets out the enduring relationship between Afro-Americans and the United States. Douglass is concerned not only with physical freedom but the right to education, work, and building a life.
