Im Herbst 1872 erschien in der Tageszeitung Le Temps in immer neuen Lieferungen die erste Fassung von Jules Vernes Roman In 80 Tagen um die Welt. Das Erscheinungsdatum der einzelnen Kapitel entsprach dabei in etwa den Etappen der fiktiven Reisegruppe um Phileas Fogg. Der exzentrische Gentleman und sein französischer Diener Passepartout brechen am 2. Oktober 1872 von London aus auf. Beide wollen beweisen, dass die Netzwerke des Weltverkehrs eine Umrundung der Erde in achtzig Tagen ermöglichen. Auf dem Spiel stehen nicht weniger als 20.000 Pfund - und Foggs Ehre.

Otto Lidenbrock ist ein ebenso angesehener wie eigenbrötlerischer Professor. In Hamburg lehrt er am Johanneum Mineralogie und Geologie. Als er ein in Runen verfasstes Manuskript aus dem 12. Jahrhundert erwirbt, entdeckt er eine verschlüsselte Botschaft des isländischen Alchemisten Arne Saknussemm. Lidenbrock weiht seinen Neffen Axel ein, mit dessen Hilfe es ihm gelingt, die Botschaft zu entschlüsseln: Sie enthält die Beschreibung des Weges zum Mittelpunkt der Erde. Ohne zu zögern beschließt der Professor, die Reise ebenfalls anzutreten. Axel soll ihn begleiten.
