Mark Twain's story, told from the standpoint of a courageous and loving she-dog, was first published in 1903. The story, by turns both funny and heartbreaking, begins with a description of her life as a puppy. As she grows, she is sold, then takes a mate and has a puppy, and her master and mistress have their first child. Her motives are misunderstood when she saves their baby from a fire and she is cruelly beaten....

London 1900 and Sherlock Holmes finds himself investigating a string of murders that have one common thread -- each of them recalls one of his earlier cases. As he follows and observes an arms smuggling operation while on undercover assignment for Scotland Yard, Chief Inspector Roderick Langham encounters Holmes and Watson from a distance at the village inn. The morning after taking the tour of an archeological dig with the talkative professor Edford, the pedant is found shot dead at the site and the Baker Street duo are on the scene.

The double-act of Bertie Wooster and his faithful, omniscient butler Jeeves is the greatest comic pairing in literature. Millions of fans worldwide have laughed at the travails of bumbling Bertie and delighted at the felicitous solutions devised by Jeeves to extricate his master from 'the soup'. In this story Bertie Wooster finds himself on a losing streak and lands himself at the mercy of his aunts, Dahlia and Agatha, and only Jeeves is capable of extricating him from disaster.

The year is 1775. The colonies are reaching the boiling point. Dissention and anxiety fill the air of St. John's Church. The day is March 28 as the delegates search for a focus in their unhappy state of affairs with the British Commonwealth. Then a man raises his voice to speak, and as he speaks, his words begin to etch the course of American history.

Flagged down by Inspector LaStrade of Scotland Yard as they walk through the icy winter streets, Holmes and Watson are transported to the home of the aristocratic Lady Whitebread. Once there, she tells them her traditional holiday centerpiece has vanished in the midst of the Christmas dinner - right under the very noses of her guests. The decoration? An enormous work of the jeweler's art centered upon a three inch round emerald called...the Christmas Jewel.

The Wind in the Willows is a longtime favorite story that centers around the animal citizens of an English riverbank. Each animal has a different personality, from easy-going Mole to water-loving Ratty, to the wise and wiley Badger, the spoiling-for-a-fight Weasels, and of course boastful Toad, the owner of splendid Toad Hall, who has too much money and too little sense to know what to do with it. The education of Toad by his well-meaning friends provides a good lesson.

Dr. Watson's introduction to this Holmes case among the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, entitled "The Adventure of Silver Blaze" ( Strand magazine, December 1892) is succinct and impossible to improve upon: "There was but one problem before the public which could challenge his powers of analysis, and that was the singular disappearance of the favourite for the Wessex Cup, and the tragic murder of its trainer."

While spending the night in an eerie, decrepit, old bungalow in late 19th-century India, the narrator tells how he begins to hear the unmistakable sounds of a billiard game in the locked adjoining room. It's a room that was once a billiard-room where one of the sahibs is said to have died in the midst of a game... and is believed to have become a ghost.

On doctor's orders, Bertie Wooster retires to the village of Maiden Eggesford, but his rest-cure is interrupted by Aunt Dahlia, who wants him to nobble a racehorse; Vanessa Cook, who wants him to act as go-between for her and Orlo Porter; and Orlo Porter himself, who would tear Bertie limb from limb if he ever discovered that Bertie and Vanessa were once engaged. Throw in a dotty explorer, an unreliable poacher, an irascible father, and the stable cat, and the stage is set for a sublime farce.

One Voice Recordings presents amazingly versatile voice actor David Ian Davies performing three of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous short stories: "Oblong Box", "The Pit and the Pendulum", and "The Black Cat".

Edgar Allan Poe's horrific short story is the account of a man's irreversible journey into madness as he awaits his execution by hanging the next morning. Fueled by bouts of alcoholism and what seems an inborn fatal streak of madness, his manic extremes of violence and guilt demand attacks upon the innocent to alay his own self-hatred.

The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions, as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love - each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith - and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

Another classic funny Jeeves and Wooster story. Bertie once again travels to Totleigh Towers to try to repair the rift in Gussie Finknottle and Madeline Basset's engagement. Pop Basset and Roderick Spode (Lord Sidcup) think he is there to steal a black amber statuette for Bertie's Uncle Tom. How could things get complicated?

A letter from an old friend, Molesworth, sends Watson to Baker Street. Travelling to Winchester, he and Holmes find Molesworth bedridden. He believes he is being poisoned in revenge for the actions of his father in Peking during the invasion of the Forbidden City.

Holmes visits a Chinese poisoner and uses fingerprints to prove his case, but the outcome is not what he would have wished.

While assisting Holmes in an embezzlement case in Falmouth, Watson is called to aid Mrs. Ranstead, the survivor of a shipwreck. She and crewman Cluney were the only survivors from a ship that was transporting an ancient meteorite from St. John's to Falmouth.

The novel tells the story of impoverished, embarrassment-prone Archibald "Archie" Moffam and his difficult relationship with his art-collecting, hotel-owning, millionaire father-in-law, Daniel Brewster, who is the father of Archie's new bride, Lucille. Archie's attempts to ingratiate himself with Brewster only get him further into trouble.

This wonderful story takes us to a town called Kasrilevke, which is inhabited by poor but cheerful "little people" whose goal in life is simply to provide for the Sabbath.

After some time of not meeting him, Tevye the Milkman meets Sholom Aleichem, the story's primary narrator as well as its author, and begins to tell of the troubles that have come on him (turning his hair gray) because of his gullibility, fatalism, and obedience to God, which make him an easy target for misfortune.
