The main purpose outside simple entertainment is that if it makes the listener think 'what if?' then it's started working. If it gets the listener doing more than thinking it's done its job. We think if the lights go out for an hour that things are rough- what if they were to go off and not come back on? Do you have food enough to carry you over until you can grow a garden?
