Il giovane protagonista del romanzo, spinto da una inarrestabile ambizione, e favorito da due travolgenti storie amorose, la prima con la moglie del sindaco di una piccola cittadina e la seconda con la figlia di un marchese, riesce ad innalzarsi nella scala sociale fino ad ottenere un titolo nobiliare e una rendita.
