Mental illness though can still carry a stigma. A case of ‘you’re not trying hard enough’, ‘or knuckling down and getting on with it’. But in more recent decades mental issues have come to be recognised as an illness, a disease rather than an affliction. We all remember horror stories of lobotomy’s and electric shock being used to ‘cure’ what society viewed as anti-social behaviour but illness, mental or physical is very real. Depression, schizophrenia, breakdown, psychosis are alarming events to have or to witness.

The Nose is a satirical short story by Nikolai Gogol written during his time living in St. Petersburg. During this time, Gogol's works were primarily focused on surrealism and the grotesque, with a romantic twist. Written between 1835 and 1836, The Nose tells the story of a St. Petersburg official whose nose leaves his face and develops a life of its own. The Cloak (sometimes translated as Overcoat) is a short story by Russian author Nikolai Gogol, published in 1842. The story and its author have had great influence on Russian literature, as expressed in a quote attributed to Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat'." The story narrates the life and death of titular councillor Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin, an impoverished government clerk and copyist in the Russian capital of St. Petersburg. May Night, or the Drowned Maiden, 1831 is the third tale in the collection Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka by Nikolai Gogol. It was made into the opera May Night by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1878–79 and also a Ukrainian setting by Mykola Lysenko. This story comes from the unnamed story-teller (who was previously responsible for "The Fair at Sorochyntsi"). In this tale, a young Cossack named Levko, the son of the mayor, is in love with Hanna. He comes to her house to talk about marriage and mentions that his father is not pleased with the idea, though he doesn't say anything directly and merely ignores him.

The Mantle, which is listed among his masterpieces, describes how Russian bureaucracy turns everyone into a ghost of each other. Die toten Seelen ist ein Roman von Nikolaj Gogol (1809-1852). Der erste Teil wurde 1842 veröffentlicht. Ursprünglich war eine Trilogie geplant, aber Gogol vollendete nur die ersten beiden Teile, wovon der zweite aber nur bruchstückhaft überliefert ist. Das Originalmanuskript des zweiten Teils vernichtete Gogol kurz vor seinem Tod.

Wij - Der Fürst der Dämonen. Eine Erzählung von Nikolai Wassiljewitsch Gogol, gelesen von Christiane Dors. Eines der berühmtesten Werke von Nikolai W. Gogol ist die Erzählung "Wij", die in der Kurzgeschichtensammlung "Mirgorod" im Jahr 1835 erstmals veröffentlicht wurde. Als Grundlage für seine Geschichte verwendete er vermutlich eine Volkslegende über den schrecklichen und mächtigen Anführer böser Geister, einer Kreatur aus der slawischen Mythologie, die eines der Hauptmotive der Geschichte bildet.
