Gogol's great comic masterpiece paints an hilariously satirical picture of provincial life in 19th century Russia. Its publication in 1847 not only provided inspiration for succeeding generations of Russian writers, but fanned the already flickering flames of social discontent which were eventually to flare up and consume Russia in the revolution of 1917.

Nichts scheint zunächst in dieser Geschichte zu stimmen, und doch stimmt alles: Der Barbier Iwan Jakowlewitsch findet beim Frühstück in seinem Brot eine Nase, die dem 37-jährigen Kollegienassessor Kowaljow gehört, den er immer mittwochs und sonntags rasiert. Voller Angst verpackt er die Nase in ein Papier und wirft sie von einer Brücke in die Newa. Entsprechend stellt jener Kowaljow beim Erwachen fest, dass ihm seine Nase fehlt.

Mental illness though can still carry a stigma. A case of ‘you’re not trying hard enough’, ‘or knuckling down and getting on with it’. But in more recent decades mental issues have come to be recognised as an illness, a disease rather than an affliction. Dead Souls is a novel by Nikolai Gogol, first published in 1842, and widely regarded as an exemplar of 19th-century Russian literature. Gogol himself saw it as an "epic poem in prose", and within the book as a "novel in verse". Despite supposedly completing the trilogy's second part, Gogol destroyed it shortly before his death.
