America in 2084 is managed primarily as three districts. The creation of the districts was part of a national compromise to reorder society after the financial system could no longer support the federal debt. The novel follows characters on both sides of the conflict, similar to The Killer Angels and A Game of Thrones, to honestly share the contrasting motivations, hopes, and fears which is almost impossible to find today from any one source.
