Shipwrecked and cast adrift, Lemuel Gulliver wakes to find himself on Lilliput, an island inhabited by little people whose height makes their quarrels over fashion and fame seem ridiculous. His subsequent encounters with the crude giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical Houyhnhnms, and the brutish Yahoos give him further insight into human behavior. Presented through Swift's satiric hall of distorting mirrors, mankind is cast as diminished, magnified, and bestial - the composite of which is an uncompromising reflection of human nature.

Swift's allegorical satire about religion and politics follows the lives of three brothers, Martin, Peter, and Jack, each of who represents a faction of the Christian faith - Anglicanism, Roman Catholicism, and the dissenting faiths, respectively. Each brother inherits a coat (representing religious practice) from their father (God) on the condition that they do not change it. But instead the three quarrelsome youths disobey their father and change their coats beyond recognition.

Gulliver sagt, dass er mehr Gnade bei einem Heiden, als bei einem Mit-Christen fand. Gulliver wird in einem Boot mit Proviant ausgesetzt. Er kommt an einigen Inseln vorbei und geht schließlich bei einer an Land. Da bemerkt er, dass die Sonne seltsam verdunkelt ist.

In Brobdingnag sind nicht nur die Menschen riesig, sondern auch die ganze Natur ist hier viel größer als Lemuel Gulliver selbst. Von einem schweren Sturm vom Kurs abgetrieben, legt das Beiboot seines Schiffes an einer Insel an, um Frischwasser zu holen. Gullivers Gefährten flüchten vor einem Riesen und lassen ihn zurück, worauf er bald von Einheimischen entdeckt wird. Die Durchschnittsgröße der riesigen Inselbewohner beträgt ungefähr 18 Meter. Von einem Pächter wird Gulliver zunächst gegen Geld ausgestellt, bevor er an das Königshaus in Lorbrulgrud, der Hauptstadt von Brobdingnag, verkauft wird.

Nachdem Gulliver fünf Monate zu Hause gewesen war, zieht es ihn erneut aufs Meer, diesmal als Kapitän eines Schiffes. Auf See aber kommt es zur Meuterei und Gulliver wird von den Meuterern an einem unbekannten Strand ausgesetzt. Auf einem Feld sieht er Tiere mit langem Haar an Kopf, Brust und Bärten, wie Ziegen ihn tragen. Als Gulliver seinen Weg fortsetzt, trifft er auf eine der widerwärtigen Kreaturen; er zieht seinen Säbel, schlägt das Tier mit der flachen Seite, so dass es brüllt, worauf die Herde vom Feld auf Gulliver zukommt und ihn mit Fäkalien besudelt. Plötzlich aber laufen sie davon, offenbar von einem Pferd verscheucht.
