The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka tells the story of Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman who wakes up one morning transformed into a giant insect. As time passes, his presence becomes unbearable to his family. Eventually, Gregor dies, and his family feels relieved. Franz Kafka was born on 3rd July 1883, in Prague, then in Bohemia, the eldest of 6, into a middle-class Jewish family. His literary works are few in number but towering in influence. His masterpieces include ‘The Trial’, ‘The Metamorphosis’ as well as a number of short stories which reveal facets of humankind that truthfully could only be born from Kafka’s brain and pen. His classic short story ‘In the Penal Colony’ begins with the innocuous words “It’s a peculiar apparatus,” as the Officer explains to the Traveller, what this grisly machine will do to the prisoners who serve their time here.

„Jemand musste Josef K. verleumdet haben, denn ohne dass er etwas Böses getan hätte, wurde er eines Morgens verhaftet.“ Vergeblich versucht er herauszufinden, wessen er angeklagt wurde und wie er sich rechtfertigen könnte. Ebenso wenig greifbar sind das Gericht und das Gesetz. In einem Prozess, von dem nicht nur die Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch der Angeklagte ausgeschlossen bleibt, wird Josef K. schließlich von einer anonymen, für ihn unerreichbaren Gerichtsinstanz, die sich seinem Verständnis entzieht, zum Tod verurteilt.
