David Herbert Richards Lawrence nació el 11 de septiembre de 1885 en Eastwood, Inglaterra. Era el cuarto hijo de Arthur John Lawrence, un minero bebedor, y de Lydia Beardsall, antigua maestra, y amante de la cultura, que inculcó en David el interés por la pintura y la lectura. Inició una relación sentimental con Frieda Weekley, cuyo apellido de soltera era von Richthofen, mujer del profesor Ernest Weekley y familiar del famoso piloto Barón Rojo, Manfred von Richthofen.

Lord Chatterley (Jens Harzer) kehrt gelähmt aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg zurück. Er erlaubt seiner jungen Frau Constanze (Nora v. Waldstätten) sich einen Liebhaber zu nehmen. Ihre daraufhin beginnende leidenschaftliche Beziehung zu dem stattlichen Wildhüter Oliver Parkin (Bernhard Schütz) geht dem Lord dann allerdings doch entschieden zu weit. Seit dem Erscheinen des erotischen Romans von D. H. Lawrence im Jahre 1928, war dieser vom Hauch des Skandalösen umweht. Da kein Verlag den Stoff herausbringen wollte, lies der Autor sein Buch zunächst in Italien im Selbstverlag herstellen. Erst 1960 erschien die vollständige Ausgabe in Lawrences britischer Heimat.
