Nur ein excellentes Festbankett, zubereitet von Meisterkoch Auguste Didier, konnte den Prince of Wales dazu bewegen, das Opfer der Ehrenpräsidentschaft über diese Zusammenkunft auf sich zu nehmen. Das Festbankett wird ein Erfolg, aber bei der anschließenden Lesung aus "Oliver Twist" sinkt der Vorlesende mitten in der Mordszene tot zu Boden. Vergiftet.

Butler Greeves war ein mächtiger Mann auf Stockbery Towers, einem Herrensitz in Kent zum Ende des vorigen Jahrhunderts. Aber beliebt war er nicht. War er ein Erpresser? Ein Heiratsschwindler? In London verfolgt Inspektor Rose unterdessen eine Serie aufsehenerregender Juwelendiebstähle: Jedes der sechs gestohlenen Schmuckstücke war in einem der sagenumwobenen Fabergé-Eier aufbewahrt, die der russische Großfürst Igor seinen Ex-Geliebten zu schenken pflegte.
