En décrivant un hypothétique conflit entre les lettres, le conte "La guerre des voyelles et des consonnes" donne vie aux entités abstraites qui constituent le langage, et interroge de manière humoristique leurs différents regroupements comme la constitution des mots. Une maison toute simple, pas bien grande, à l'orée d'un village… Du matin au soir et du soir au matin elle retentissait de rires et de chants… La vielle dame qui habitait là depuis toujours accueillait les enfants du voisinage mais aussi les chats perdus, les chiens errants, les hérissons à trois pattes, le vieil âne dont personne ne voulait, le lièvre qui n'y voyait plus… les insectes y voletaient toute la journée, les abeilles butinaient sans piquer personne… Le temps s'y écoulait agréablement.
