Tess komt uit een welgestelde, maar weinig betrokken familie die net is verhuisd. Als ze op de eerste schooldag van het laatste jaar van de middelbare school Jay ontmoet, is er tussen hen direct een niet te negeren aantrekkingskracht. Jay kan binnen het gezin waarin hij is opgegroeid maar net het hoofd boven water houden. Tess is de eerste in zijn leven bij wie hij open durft te zijn.
