Ein angesehener Bankier aus der Londoner City ersucht Holmes um die Aufklärung eines seltsamen Vorfalls: Ein diamantenbesetztes Diadem, das ihm ein Mitglied des englischen Hochadels zur vorübergehenden Verwahrung übergeben hatte, sollte offenbar gestohlen werden. Bei diesem Versuch wurde es jedoch nur stark beschädigt, wobei ein kleiner fehlender Teil tatsächlich verschwunden ist. Zu allem Überdruss hat die Polizei den Sohn des Bankiers in Verdacht.

Während die meisten Abenteuer von Sherlock Holmes durch die Notizen und Publikationen von Dr. John Watson hinlänglich belegt und bekannt sind, gibt es auch eine gewisse Anzahl an Fällen, die der Öffentlichkeit damals geradezu zwingend vorenthalten werden mussten: Insbesondere im beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert hatte Holmes mit einigen höchst ungewöhnlichen Rätseln zu tun, deren Aufklärung gängige wissenschaftliche Anschauungen und normale rdische Zusammenhänge mitunter sprengten.

Ab 1887 erschienen 60 klassische Schilderungen der berühmten Abenteuer von Sherlock Holmes, fast alle davon als Aufzeichnungen von Holmes' Mitstreiter Dr. John Watson. Mit der Reihe der Originale werden die klassischen Abenteuer von Holmes und Watson, die bereits einem breiten Publikum bekannt wurden, erstmals in ihrer ursprünglichen Version veröffentlicht, inklusive aller Passagen, Handlungsstränge und Dialoge, die seinerzeit der Selbstzensur oder dem Ziel einer erzählerischen Straffung zum Opfer gefallen sind.

Holmes und Watson untersuchen die Wohnung des toten Täters. Dabei entdecken sie eine umfassende Scheinidentität, unter deren Deckmantel die bisherigen Verbrechen durchgeführt wurden. Holmes ist sich sicher, dass der andere Täter die Mordserie auch allein fortsetzen wird.

Der Archivar der Universität stirbt bei einem dubiosen Unfall, den Holmes rasch als Mord einordnet. Offenbar gibt es einen weiteren, bislang unbekannten Komplizen, der nach Rache sinnt und eine neue Todesliste abarbeitet.

Nach einem entsprechenden Hinweis eilen Holmes, Watson und Lestrade ins Krankenhaus. Als sie dort ankommen, müssen sie jedoch feststellen, dass Sommerset aus seinem Zimmer verschwunden ist. Der verbliebene Täter muss ihn entführt haben.

Auf dem Hammersmith-Friedhof suchen Holmes, Lestrade und Watson die finale Konfrontation mit dem letzten Täter, doch es kommt anders. Was zunächst nach einer glücklichen Fügung aussieht, entpuppt sich allerdings als Falle.
