Ein angesehener Bankier aus der Londoner City ersucht Holmes um die Aufklärung eines seltsamen Vorfalls: Ein diamantenbesetztes Diadem, das ihm ein Mitglied des englischen Hochadels zur vorübergehenden Verwahrung übergeben hatte, sollte offenbar gestohlen werden. Bei diesem Versuch wurde es jedoch nur stark beschädigt, wobei ein kleiner fehlender Teil tatsächlich verschwunden ist. Zu allem Überdruss hat die Polizei den Sohn des Bankiers in Verdacht.

Während die meisten Abenteuer von Sherlock Holmes durch die Notizen und Publikationen von Dr. John Watson hinlänglich belegt und bekannt sind, gibt es auch eine gewisse Anzahl an Fällen, die der Öffentlichkeit damals geradezu zwingend vorenthalten werden mussten: Insbesondere im beginnenden 20. Jahrhundert hatte Holmes mit einigen höchst ungewöhnlichen Rätseln zu tun, deren Aufklärung gängige wissenschaftliche Anschauungen und normale rdische Zusammenhänge mitunter sprengten.

Ab 1887 erschienen 60 klassische Schilderungen der berühmten Abenteuer von Sherlock Holmes, fast alle davon als Aufzeichnungen von Holmes' Mitstreiter Dr. John Watson. Mit der Reihe der Originale werden die klassischen Abenteuer von Holmes und Watson, die bereits einem breiten Publikum bekannt wurden, erstmals in ihrer ursprünglichen Version veröffentlicht, inklusive aller Passagen, Handlungsstränge und Dialoge, die seinerzeit der Selbstzensur oder dem Ziel einer erzählerischen Straffung zum Opfer gefallen sind.

Eine Klientin beauftragt Holmes, in ihrer Sache zu vermitteln und Milverton zum Einlenken in einem Erpressungsfall zu bewegen. Doch dieser bleibt hart. Für den Meisterdetektiv eine Herausforderung. Er nimmt diese an und stellt sich Milverton zum Duell.

Joseph Habakuk Jephson, a soldier who was hurt in the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, is in convalescence. One day, an old Black maid offers him a Black oval-shaped stone which belonged to her ancestors. At the end of the war, Jephson gets married and establishes himself as a doctor in Brooklyn. Conan Doyle has been inspired by the real case of the ship Mary Celeste which was found drifting in the Atlantic off Portugal, under full sail but apparently abandoned.

One evening after supper, he falls asleep and dreams that the greatest writers of the last few centuries are invited to his table to create a story: William Defoe, Tobias Smollett, Jonathan Swift, Henry Fielding, Samuel Richardson, Lawrence Sterne, Sir Walter Scott, George Eliot, William M. Thackeray, James Payn, Walter Besant, a lady known as "Ouida", Robert Louis Stevenson, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and Captain Marryat.

Indeed, the boat could be trapped in the ice at any moment, resulting in a sudden death for everyone. One morning Mr. Manson, the second mate, reports he saw a ghost at night. His story is not taken seriously, and is put down to idleness.

Robert Armitage tells how his friend John Barrington Cowles died in strange circumstances. In the spring of 1879, the two students visited an exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. This is where Cowles met a beautiful lady named Kate Northcott, and they instantly fell in love with each other.
