Da comune utente del web ho sempre ritenuto che collaborare, anche solo a titolo gratuito, con Wikipedia sia un'esperienza estremamente gratificante per chi la svolge. Avere un qualsiasi ruolo nel campo della conoscenza non è come diventare Presidente di una grande azienda o avere successo in una carriera politica. E' molto di più.

Il primo romanzo di Valerio Di Stefano (1964, filologo, iberista e curatore di edizione elettroniche e audiolibri dei grandi classici della letteratura mondiale) ci trasporta nel mondo illusorio di Don Fiorentino, parroco di uno sconosciuto paese e grande appassionato di libri e sigari toscani, e dei suoi tormenti interiori. Tra manie, tic, ricordi e eterni riti quotidiani, il protagonista riceve i suoi fantasmi prima di presentarsi all'appuntamento più importante della propria vita, in un una girandola di eterni ritorni del passato.

L'essenza dell'Abruzzo è declinata in questa novella nei suoi peculiari aspetti culturali. Lo sguardo attento e compiaciuto di Valerio Di Stefano ci accompagna attraverso le viuzze di un paesino dove la vita scorre ancora lenta, tra i profumi e i sapori di una terra "forte e gentile" come i suoi abitanti. "Lo schiaffatone" si differenzia completamente dalle precedenti narrazioni, mantenendo però il solito marchio di fabbrica: un'ironia inconfondibile e sottile che, in queste pagine, diventa bonaria ed empatica.

Natale in casa Cupiello fu rappresentata per la prima volta al Teatro Kursaal di Napoli, in forma di atto unico, nel 1931. Questo scarno dato storico-temporale, non è sufficiente, tuttavia, a definire e circoscrivere l'estrema complessità dell'opera, sia nella sua genesi ed evoluzione teatrale ed editoriale che nei suoi contenuti. L’autore propone una sorta di lettura trasversale per tematiche, allo scopo di evidenziare la circolarità della commedia, che si costituisce come un cerchio narrativamente concluso.

Questo non è un libro di morale, né un grido di dolore o, tanto meno, una lamentazione acritica e dozzinale su come va il mondo. Si tratta, molto più semplicemente, di una sorta di testamento spirituale di un uomo che, giunto alle soglie dei sessant'anni, e con la viva speranza di vivere ancora molto a lungo, fa un bilancio non tanto della propriai vita, quanto della vita in générale, cercando di inserirvi tutto quanto in essa ha appreso.
