Trowbridge Dispatch is part of the Trowbridge, Vermont series of novels and stories, wherein I.M. Aiken draws on her roots in public safety to narrate tales of the everyday heroes that every community depends on.

Al of Trowbridge Rescue works a shift on a commercial ambulance on the day that Vermont experiences the first ears of sweet corn. One medic says: “I wanna eat so much corn, I’ll shit kernels ‘til Thursday.” He partner replies, “The butter and salt will drip down my chin”. The crew of two ambulances celebrate an ersatz holiday.

Im Lehrerzimmer unserer Schule herrscht weihnachtliche Aufregung. Die Meinungen der Lehrer über die bevorstehende Festzeit gehen weit auseinander. Herr Philipp Philipp und Frau Klein begrüßen die Weihnachtszeit mit offenen Armen und strahlen Gelassenheit aus. Sie genießen die festliche Atmosphäre und gehen alles mit einem entspannten Lächeln an. Aber nicht alle teilen diese entspannte Sichtweise. Frau Bohnenkemper-Müller und Frau Barsch sind im Gegenteil von einem wachsenden Dauerstress geplagt.

Die Winterkälte hat die Schule erreicht, und die Schüler der Klasse, darunter Tessa, Layla, Chanel und Bibo, spüren die sinkenden Temperaturen im kalten Klassenraum. Trotz der eisigen Kälte und einer defekten Heizung versuchen sie, das Beste daraus zu machen. Doch der Tag hält Überraschungen bereit: Der erste Schnee des Jahres fällt, und Bibo ist fasziniert von der winterlichen Pracht draußen. In dieser Geschichte erleben die Schüler eine Reihe von Emotionen – von Aufregung über den ersten Schnee bis hin zur Frustration über die unerwartete Verlängerung des Schultags.

Tessa wird unerwartet von der Schule suspendiert, was ihre Freunde nicht hinnehmen wollen. Layla, Bibo und Chanel setzen alles daran, ihre Freundin zurückzuholen.
