The story is set in an unnamed penal colony. In the Penal Colony describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin in a script before letting him die, all in the course of 12 hours. As the plot unfolds, the listener learns more and more about the machine, including its origin, and original justification.

Ein Hungerkünstler lebt zunächst in Zeiten, in denen in der Öffentlichkeit ein reges Interesse an seiner Kunst besteht. In seinem Gitterkäfig wird er vom Publikum von Hungertag zu Hungertag interessiert begutachtet und bewundert. Für den Hungerkünstler ist aber das andauernde Hungern "die leichteste Sache von der Welt". Er leidet darunter, dass man ihm das nicht glaubt, ihm möglicherweise sogar unterstellt, geschickt heimlich zu essen, oder ihm zumindest absichtlich die Möglichkeit dazu gibt. Zudem besteht sein Impresario darauf, dass er nach vierzig Tagen das Hungern beenden solle.

"The Great Wall of China" is a short story by Franz Kafka. While written in 1917, it was not published until 1930, seven years after his death. Its first publication occurred in Der Morgen, a German literary magazine. A year later, Max Brod included it in Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer, the first posthumous collection of short stories by Franz Kafka. Contained within the story is a parable that was separately published as "A Message from the Emperor" ("Eine kaiserliche Botschaft") in 1919 in the collection Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor).

"A Report to an Academy" is a short story by Franz Kafka, written and published in 1917. In the story, an ape named Red Peter, who has learned to behave like a human, presents to an academy the story of how he effected his transformation. The narrator, speaking before a scientific conference, describes his former life as an ape. His story begins in a West African jungle, in which a hunting expedition shoots and captures him. Caged on a ship for his voyage to Europe, he finds himself for the first time without the freedom to move as he will.

"A Hunger Artist" is a short story by Franz Kafka first published in Die neue Rundschau in 1922. The story was also included in the collection A Hunger Artist, the last book Kafka prepared for publication, which was printed by Verlag Die Schmiede shortly after his death. The protagonist, a hunger artist who experiences the decline in appreciation of his craft, is typically Kafkaesque: an individual marginalized and victimized by society at large.

"The Hunter Gracchus" is a short story by Franz Kafka. The story presents a boat carrying the long-dead Hunter Gracchus as it arrives at a port. The mayor of Riva meets Gracchus, who gives him an account of his death while hunting, and explains that he is destined to wander aimlessly and eternally over the seas. An additional fragment presents an extended dialogue between Gracchus and an unnamed interviewer, presumably the same mayor.Written in the first half of 1917, the story was published posthumously in Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer (Berlin, 1931).

"Jackals and Arabs" is a short story by Franz Kafka, written and published in 1917. The story was first published by Martin Buber in the German monthly Der Jude. A European traveler from the North, accompanied by Arab guides, is camped in the desert. When night falls, and the Arabs are at a distance, the traveler is accosted by talking jackals. The jackals speak of an age-old hatred for Arabs, whom they associate with uncleanliness. They relate a belief passed down from their ancestors, that a man such as the protagonist would be the one to "end the quarrel which divides the world in two".

"A Country Doctor" is a short story written in 1917 by Franz Kafka. It was first published in the collection of short stories of the same title. In the story, a country doctor makes an emergency visit to a sick patient on a winter night. The doctor faces absurd, surreal predicaments that pull him along and finally doom him. A Country Doctor is perhaps Kafka's most fantastical or surreal work. It takes its cue from Gothic literature – it has echoes of Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne – and analysing and identifying the core 'meaning' of the story has proved tricky

"In the Penal Colony" is a short story by Franz Kafka written in German in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. Internal clues and the setting on an island suggest Octave Mirbeau's The Torture Garden as an influence.

"Eine neue Wirklichkeit schuf Kafka in seinen Werken, eine neue, eigene Atmosphäre, reiner, kälter, strenger als unsere, und doch nur Abbild und Ausdruck unserer Wirklichkeit (…) Nicht jedem und nicht leicht ist diese neue Welt zugänglich. "Nie mehr Psychologie" heisst es bei Kafka in den Oktav- heften. Gleichwohl: Der Brief an den Vater ist das Dokument einer sublimen psychologischen Hellsichtigkeit. In Andeutungen schildert der Sohn das für ein ganzes Leben Unglaubliche: Den unwiderstehlichen Drang des doch so kraftvollen Vaters aus dessen geheimem Gefühl der Inferiorität seinen eigenen Sohn zu demütigen und zu depravieren.

Kafkas Dichtungen sind, so Thomas Mann, "oft ganz und gar im Charakter des Traumes konzipiert und gestaltet; sie ahmen die alogische und beklommene Narretei der Träume, dieser wunderlichen Schattenspiele des Lebens, zum Lachen genau nach" und bedürfen bei der sprecherischen Wieder-Holung sowohl tiefer Einfühlung als auch zugleich persönlicher Zurücknahme. Nur im sprecherischen Nachempfinden dieser für Kafka spezifischen Methodik wird möglich, was Albert Camus beschreibt: dass der Zuhörende "an die Grenzen des menschlichen Denkens versetzt" wird. "Besondere Methode des Denkens.

"Es gestaltet sich in Kafkas Erzählung ein ursprünglicher Trieb zur Güte aus, kein Ressentiment, sondern etwas von der verschütteten Leidenschaft des Kindesalters für das Gute; jenes Gefühl aufgeregter Kindergebete (...) und viel, wofür man keinen anderen Ausdruck als moralische Zartheit bilden kann.
