Guy de Maupassant's powerful and poignant story of a brief moment of mysterious passion in a young man's life, related in a letter found on his drowned corpse.

M. Savalle, a small-town notary and amateur operatic singer with pretensions, travels to Paris to visit the opera and takes the opportunity to rub shoulders with famous artists in the cafés of Montmartre. He is unexpectedly invited to a housewarming party by a notable painter...but things do not go at all as he expected. His host vanishes unexpectedly and M. Savalle is left in charge of the occasion. When the guests arrive, they mistake him for the waiter...and from there things only get worse.

Set during the Franco-Prussian war, de Maupassant's story tells of a group of German soldiers occupying and gradually vandalising a stately home in Normandy. Bored of the dull location and incessant rain, the group of young officers decide to send to the nearest town for a group of prostitutes, so that they can hold an orgiastic dinner party. Among the women is the spirited young Rachel, whose willingness to fraternize with the Prussians is put to the test, with catastrophic results.

Miss Harriet is a mysterious and odd middle-aged lady who has taken up residence in an obscure corner of the French countryside, where she communes with nature and reads odd religious tracts. A peasant attending the market in the neighboring town stoops to pick up a piece of string from the road. Later that day, he is maliciously accused of picking up a lost pocketbook containing five hundred francs and some valuable business papers. Although he is innocent of the charge, and the pocketbook is later handed in to the mayor by the person who actually found it, the taint of the accusation remains. The more the man protests his innocence, the less he is believed.
