Nur Alice Turner, die Herzensdame des jungen Mannes, glaubt an dessen Un-schuld. Daher wendet sie sich an Sherlock Holmes und bittet um seine Hilfe. Sehr zum Unmut des In-spektors vermutet Holmes die Unschuld McCarthys noch bevor er mit den eigentlichen Untersuchungen beginnt.

Kate Whitney ist verzweifelt: Seit zwei Tagen scheint ihr Mann wie vom Erdboden verschluckt zu sein und es gibt noch immer kein Lebenszeichen von ihm.
