שמונת הסיפורים שבקובץ מתרחשים בקיבוץ הדמיוני יקהת, ומשרטטים דיוקנאות מפליאים בעדינותם של נשים וגברים החולמים חלומות אינטימיים וחווים מכאובים פרטיים בצלו של אחד החלומות הקולקטיביים הגדולים בתולדות המאה העשרים. אב מבוגר שבתו הצעירה עוברת להתגורר עם חבר קיבוץ בן גילו; אישה הכותבת מכתב מצמרר לאישה שלמענה נטש אותה בעלה; ילד חוץ היוצא לבקר את אביו בבית חולים לתשושי נפש; וגנן מזדקן הנושא על כתפיו את כל אסונות העולם - כל אחד מן הסיפורים הפרטיים האלה הוא פנינה של אנושיות ספרותית ויחד הם נשזרים למחרוזת שהיא גם דיוקן של רעיון ושל תקופה.

בחורף של שנת 1959 עולמו של שמואל אַש הצעיר מתהפך עליו: חברתו עוזבת אותו, הוריו פושטים רגל, והוא נאלץ לקטוע את לימודיו באוניברסיטה. לאחר ייאוש הוא מוצא לו מפלט ופרנסה בבית אבן ירושלמי נושן, ששָׁם עליו לשמש איש שיחה לזקן נכה ושנון. כשהוא מגיע לביתו החדש פוגש שמואל אישה יפה ומושכת ושמה עתליה אברבנאל, המבוגרת ממנו כמעט פי שניים, והיא רומזת לו שמוטב שלא יתאהב בה, פן יסולק מן המקום כמו קודמיו.

רומן המכתבים הידוע של עמוס עוז מנסה לפענח את פרשת נישואיהם האומללים של אילנה ואלכס, ואת פשר התכחשותו לבנם המשותף. היא נישאה מחדש וגרה בירושלים, אלכס גר בשיקאגו, ואחרי שנים של נתק ביניהם אילנה כותבת לו - ופותחת בכך סודות ישנים, עלבונות ושקרים. לתכתובת הענפה - עשרות מכתבים ומברקים - מצטרפות דמויות נוספות: בנם בועז, בעלה השני של אילנה, אחותה רחל ועורך דינו של אלכס, כל אחד כותב בסגנונו הייחודי ומוסיף עוד נדבך לדרמה המהפנטת הזאת.

מאז ראה אור לראשונה, ב-1968, תורגם מיכאל שלי לעשרים ושמונה שפות וזכה בפרסים רבים. אבל בהקדמה שכתב במיוחד למהדורה חגיגית זו מתוודה עמוס עוז שהספר כמעט נכפה עליו: "דמותה של חנה השתלטה עלי מבפנים עד כדי כך שהתחלתי לדבר בלשונה ולחלום את חלומותיה בלילות... היא באה מן המקום שממנו באה, נכנסה לתוכי ולא הרפתה ממני." עמוס עוז הוא חתן פרס ישראל לספרות, חתן פרס גתה, ושמו מוכר כיום לאוהבי ספרות בכל העולם.

קובץ הסיפורים ארצות התן ראה אור לראשונה בשנת 1965, וסימן כבר אז את עוצמתו של עמוס עוז כמספר מחונן. הוא היה בן 23 בלבד כאשר כתב שלושה מתוך עשרת הסיפורים המכונסים כאן; בכולם מופיעים המאפיינים שילוו את יצירתו בשנים הבאות: תיאורים וירטואוזיים של נוף נפשי וגיאוגרפי, תובנות פסיכולוגיות ומוסריות , שילוב נקודות המבט ואותה רגישות נדירה לשפה העברית.
