Typhoon is the story of an old steamer and a veteran captain. The captain is normally calm and in control but the ship's sudden envelopment by a typhoon brings out both the best characteristics and the worst of the captain and his crew. This story is a penetrating look at the human spirit in the face of disaster - a recurring theme in Conrad's works.

Lord Jim may have been based in part on true events. Although Conrad never confirmed this assertion, similarities to real life events appear too strong to be dismissed as mere coincidence. The novel is in two main parts: firstly Jim's lapse aboard the Patna and his consequent fall, and secondly, an adventure story about Jim's rise and the tale's denouement amongst the people of Patusan - set in the Indonesian archipelago.

"La laguna" è un racconto breve composto nel 1896 e pubblicato per la prima volta nel "Conrhill Magazine". La storia narra di un uomo bianco, riferito come "Tuan" (l'equivalente di Lord o Sir) che viaggia attraverso la foresta pluviale indonesiana. L'uomo è costretto a fermarsi per una notte con un amico malesiano di nome Arsat. Al suo arrivo trova Arsat sofferente perchè la sua amata sta morendo. Arsat racconta all'uomo la storia del suo passato. La storia è colma di simbolismi, quali l'uso del chiaro/scuro, bianco/nero, alba/tramonto.

Om bord er 800 pilgrimme, der hjælpeløse ser til, mens officerer og mandskab flygter fra det skib, de frygter skal til at synke. Se trata de un autorretrato semejante a una novela, que reúne los sucesos relativos a la azarosa infancia y familia de Conrad, una parte de su vida como escritor y también el proceso de composición de su primera novela. Joseph Conrad fue un escritor polaco e inglés conocido por haber escrito El corazón de las tinieblas, su biografía ficcionada de su paso por la África colonial.

"Lord Jim" to najwyżej dziś ceniona powieść Conrada, choć wcześniej dostrzegli ją czytelnicy niż krytycy. Najbardziej uderza w tej historii wielość narratorów i związana z tym zmienność punktów widzenia oraz rozmaitość perspektyw czasowych. Wyjątkowość "Lorda Jima" wynika również z faktu, że wywodzi się z różnych rodzajów literatury. Poznajemy losy młodego Anglika, najpierw jako oficera marynarki handlowej, potem pracującego w portach południowo-wschodniej Azji, by wreszcie zdobyć rolę przywódcy na Borneo.

Conrads Novelle, die Francis Ford Coppola zu seinem Meisterwerk "Apocalypse Now" inspirierte, ist ein düsteres Meisterwerk, das zu den berühmtesten Geschichten der Welt gehört. Il romanzo si apre con il viaggio del giovane ufficiale in seconda Jim su un vascello, il Patna. Lo scontro con un relitto fa credere che la nave sia in procinto di affondare e Jim la abbandona con sopra i passeggeri. Jim, che nel fondo è un idealista, si pente subito del gesto vile, frutto di un atto impulsivo dettato dall'orrore del momento, ma anche un'inchiesta sancirà la sua colpa. Nel tentativo di rifarsi una vita, va in giro per il mondo, sfuggendo a se stesso, cercando l'anonimato.

"J'ai tenté avec un respect presque filial de rendre la vibration vitale du vaste monde des eaux, du coeur des hommes simples qui, depuis des siècles, traverses ses solitudes." Ainsi s'exprime Conrad à propos de son récit. Mais "Typhon" n'est pas que la relation d'une épreuve maritime.

A través de un personaje ficticio (el viejo marinero "Marlow"), Conrad describe una travesía por el río Congo en busca del señor "Kurtz" que es el jefe de una explotación de marfil. El encuentro con Kurtz, será la confirmación de la hipócrita actitud colonialista y pone en tela de juicio su carácter de cruzada moral y comercial. El director de cine Francis Ford Coppola se basó en este breve relato para su película Apocalypse Now, que si bien estaba ambientada en la guerra de Vietnam, mantenía el espíritu del relato de Conrad.

In its later years, it also included short stories and plays, and went on to win the distinguished Peabody award. University Theater relied on excellent distillations of the novels. and first-class acting alongside high production values.

Hosted by Laurence Olivier, these big-name productions also included the creme de la creme of acting talents from John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson and Orson Welles to Trevor Howard, Michael Redgrave and Olivier himself. They were based on works by the world's leading authors, among them Charles Dickens, Henry James, Oscar Wilde and Anton Chekhov. These are but a few of whose company we shall be keeping as we raise the curtain on our first instalment of theatrical history.
