The Warlord of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, is the third book in his famous Barsoom series. This novel continues where The Gods of Mars abruptly ended. John Carter's wife, the princess Dejah Thoris, is imprisoned in the Temple of the Sun by the vile pretender goddess Issus. It is said one has to wait an entire Barsoomian year before the room the prisoner is in revolves back to the entrance.

The only way out leads Werper to the sacrificial chamber of the Flaming God, where he soon finds himself the next victim. Tarzan is quick to recover his strength, but not his memory!

Thuvia of Ptarth is spurning the unwanted advances of another when Cathoris of Helium arrives at her court. Cathoris loves Thuvia, but she has been promised to another and, like all Martian princesses, cannot return Cathoris' affections. Warlord that he is, Cathoris accepts her refusal of his affections and promises her his eternal friendship and help.
