The action is set during World War I. While John Clayton, Lord Greystoke (Tarzan), is away from his plantation home in British East Africa, it is destroyed by invading German troops from Tanganyika. On his return, he discovers among many burned bodies one that appears to be the corpse of his wife, Jane Porter Clayton. Another fatality is the Waziri warrior Wasimbu, left crucified by the Germans. Maddened, the ape-man seeks revenge not only on the perpetrators of the tragedy, but all Germans, and he sets out for the battlefront of the war in East Africa.

The apes raise him as an ape child would be, learning to swing through the trees on vines and talk to the other inhabitants of the jungle, but Tarzan always knows he is different. When he is an adult, his already-strange world is flipped upside down by the arrival of other humans in his jungle.

In the sequel to Tarzan of the Apes, Tarzan has given up on marrying Jane Porter and is quickly dissatisfied with his life among human society. After facing several humans who scheme to kill him, he decides to return to the jungles of Africa to be in the environment he was raised in once more. Along the way, he hears rumors about a lost city of gold hiding among the trees and sets off with newfound friends to pursue the treasure, unaware of the dangers surrounding the lost city.

On a submarine that had been captured in the English Channel, the combatants from several countries fight for the ownership of the vessel. After a series of unfortunate circumstances, the submarine is sent off-course into the South Pacific and then is even further rerouted to Antarctica.
