L'action se situe durant la guerre de 1870 : dix personnes fuient Rouen, occupée par les soldats prussiens, pour gagner Dieppe en diligence. Parmi ces dix personnes, se trouvent des bourgeois, des commerçants, des nobles, et une prostituée, surnommée Boule de Suif, à cause de son embonpoint.

Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893), a French author, was one of the most influential short story writers of the 19th century. 'Le Horla' is a truly terrifying story of a man, told through the pages of his diary, who is under the malign influence of some strange, invisible, parasitic being which saps his life energy. De Maupassant's clear, pragmatic language contrasts eerily with the ghastly and macabre narrative and draws the listener into the sheer terror of the situation.

Guy de Maupassant was an absolute master of the short story genre, delighting in clever plotting, concise style, and efficient storytelling, which he used to produce stunning pieces in a very condensed format. Herr Bondel kommt sich verloren vor, so allein, und möchte sich versöhnen. Er fährt zu einem Bekannten in die Stadt, bei dem er seine Frau vermutet.
