Maupassant stammt aus einer normannischen Gutsbesitzerfamilie. Bereits mit seinem ersten Werk, der Novelle "Fettklößchen", landete er einen großen Erfolg. Es folgte eine unzählige Reihe von Erzählungen. Auch einige Romane schrieb Maupassant. Vor allem aber gilt er bis heute als Meister der Novelle. Auch "Die Schwestern Rondoli" sind so eine Meistererzählung. In ihr teilt das seltsame Mädchen Francesca zuerst das Eisenbahnabteil und später auch das Bett mit einem Franzosen, der durch Italien reist. Ein Jahr später will er sie erneut in Genua besuchen, aber sie ist nicht da. Allerdings gibt es noch eine Schwester namens Carlotta.
