Three of Fitzgerald's early short stories: "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong", "Jemina, the Mountain Girl", and "Tarquin of Cheapside". Each story is fascinating in its own way, with roots that lead to his novels. His writing, even at this early stage in his career, is like champagne. "Dalyrimple" has some of the themes Dreiser later used in An American Tragedy; "Jemina" sounds like what would happen if Mark Twain met southwestern humor; "Tarquin" is unique and better listened to than discussed.

Brian Dalrymple returns home after three weeks of pursuing the retreating Germans at the end of World War I. His hometown considers him a hero, and gives him a hero’s welcome. After basking in his quickly disappearing notoriety, he goes looking for job. Seems all those wonderful offers have gone away, and Brian takes a job as a stock clerk in Mr. Macy’s wholesale grocery. It doesn’t take Brian long to find that advancement is going to be difficult, and he is stuck in a no-win job with few prospects.

This story, a whimsical "fantasy" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, first published in 1921, became (in December 2008) a major motion picture starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. This audiobook is not associated with the Hollywood movie, however; it is entirely faithful to Fitzgerald's original short story.

Amory Blaine, a handsome, wealthy, spoiled and snobbish young man from the Midwest, attends Princeton University and acquires a refined sense of the proper "social" values. Lacking all sense of purpose, he interests himself in literary cults, vaguely "liberal" student activities, and a series of flirtations with some rather predatory young ladies. This short story remains an enigma, as F. Scott Fitzgerald once again takes on the aristocracy. The heroine, Ardita, beautiful, rich, and spoiled rotten lounges on her uncle's yacht until she is carried away by an offshore pirate, Curtis Carlyle. Carlyle tells her of his upbringing as poor white trash in a Tennessee town, and his rise to become a successful musician - but one who has never been able to dance with the aristocracy. Until that is, the beautiful, spoiled-rotten Ardita falls in love with him, as much as she is capable of falling in love with anyone other than herself, on the deserted tropical island.

Lois, a beautiful 19-year-old young woman travels to Baltimore to meet Harold, her love interest, as they consider a breakup. We never meet Harold; instead, the short story becomes more about Catholicism and the priesthood, as Lois first spends an afternoon with Keith, her 36-year-old brother, a seminarian in a Jesuit monastery. Lois and Keith have not seen one another for 16 years, so it is an extremely interesting reunion.

The debut novel of F. Scott Fitzgerald, This Side of Paradise takes its title from a line of the Rupert Brooke poem 'Tiare Tahiti'. The book examines the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. Its protagonist, Amory Blaine, is an attractive Princeton University student who dabbles in literature and conveys the book's theme of love warped by greed and status-seeking.

The title of this short story by F Scott Fitzgerald is a bit deceptive and doesn't do this story justice. The four fists are actually four very valuable life lessons delivered with a fist.
