The Warlord of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, is the third book in his famous Barsoom series. This novel continues where The Gods of Mars abruptly ended. John Carter's wife, the princess Dejah Thoris, is imprisoned in the Temple of the Sun by the vile pretender goddess Issus. It is said one has to wait an entire Barsoomian year before the room the prisoner is in revolves back to the entrance.

This is the fifth story in the Tarzan adventure novels. Tarzan’s enemy in this book is a Belgian traitor and an Arab chieftain named Achmet Zek. Tarzan intends to "liberate" more jewels from the lost city of Opar, unaware that his enemies know of his plan and that they intend to liberate the jewels from Tarzan. The Chessmen of Mars is the fifth novel in the Barsoom Series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Princess Tara, the daughter of John Carter and Dejah Thoris, receives prospective suitors at her father’s court. When Princess Tara meets Prince Jed Gahan from Gathol, she thinks he is a popinjay, but she eventually learns to respect and even love him while fighting the terrible Kaldanes from Banths.

A spy, Albert Werper, has been sent by Tarzan's long time foe, Achmet Zek, to abduct Jane. His plan changes when he discovers that Tarzan is bankrupt and must return to the lost city of Opar to bring back more gold. While Tarzan and the spy are in the treasure tomb, an earthquake strikes Tarzan down and blocks the exit. The only way out leads Werper to the sacrificial chamber of the Flaming God, where he soon finds himself the next victim. Tarzan is quick to recover his strength, but not his memory!
