Il giovane Giovanni raggiunge Padova per gli studi universitari ma, non appena si affaccia alla finestra della pensione in cui ha preso residenza, ogni pensiero accademico scompare. Tra i fiori di un bizzarro giardino vi è difatti una splendida rosa: il suo nome è Beatrice, esile e bellissima figlia dell'inquietante dottor Rappaccini. Lei, che rifiuta tutti gli ammiratori, sembra più che favorevole al delicato corteggiamento di Giovanni. Ma in molti avvisano il ragazzo, esortandolo a stare alla larga dalla splendida fanciulla: il padre non esita di fronte a nulla in nome della scienza.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) diede vita a una narrativa "americana" radicata nei valori originari dei coloni, stilisticamente impeccabile. Dopo la "Lettera scarlatta" tra le opere più interessanti di Hawthorne troviamo la raccolta dei "Racconti narrati due volte" da cui sono tratti questi tre racconti che mostrano una sapiente organizzazione formale; vi troviamo le dicotomie bene-male, intelletto-emotività, ragione-istinto, la tendenza a trovare una ragione morale ai comportamenti umani.

Selbst seiner Verlobten verbirgt der Pfarrer sein Antlitz und schreckt schließlich vor seinem eigenen Spiegelbild zurück.

Il romanzo di Bithedale, o di Valgioiosa, o di Valgioconda, pubblicato nel 1852, è il terzo successo di Hawthorne. Ispirandosi agli ideali di Fourier, un gruppo di benestanti "radical-chic" vivono un'esperienza comunitaria in campagna, lavorando la terra e rinunciando al servizio di domestici come era loro abitudine in città. L'autore, che narra in prima persona, diviene spettatore di un triangolo amoroso in cui l'amore non è però l'unico o il principale ingrediente.

Quattro racconti di Nathaniel Hawthorne, caratterizzati dall'essere ai confini della realtà. "Il gran carbonchio", una caccia da una preziosissima pietra, ambientata nel far West; "La statuetta di neve", in cui si mettono in guardia coloro che vogliono far del bene a tutti i costi; "La figura di prua", in cui lo spirito dell'arte passa come una folata angelica, o diabolica, a scelta del lettore; e "La vergine dei veleni", in cui si ribadisce che l'essere amati è da preferire all'essere temuti.

"David Swan" zeigt eindrucksvoll auf, dass unzählige Schicksalsstränge mit jeder Handlung und Nicht-Handlung verknüpft sind, so dass zu jedem Zeitpunkt sich das Geschick eines jeden in unzählige Zukunftsvarianten verändern kann. "Die Höhle der drei Hügel" rät davon ab mit den Toten in Kontakt zu treten, denn wer weiß was passiert, wenn diese antworten.

Diese leicht sonderbare Geschichte vermittelt den Eindruck, als ob der gute Nathaniel Hawthorne sie geschrieben hätte, um fanatischen Puritanern einen Knochen hinzuwerfen. Die aus guten Gründen unterlassene Bestattung eines Freundes ist aus Sicht der Götter nicht zu rechtfertigen und führt zu einer persönlichen und familiären Tragödie. Eine literarische Telenovela!

Rappacinis Tochter ist eine wunderschöne junge Frau, deren Vater ein geheimnisvoller Botaniker in Neapel ist. Beide pflegen einen extravaganten Garten, in welchem der schwer verliebte Giovanni Guasconti von "Beatrice" mit einer mystischen Gabe beglückt wird. Aber wenn erst einmal der eigene Atem den Hauch des Todes verströmt, dann gerät auch die stärkste Liebe ins Wanken.

Auf diesem Hörbuch finden sich zwei Erzählungen des Romantikers der Dunkelheit Nathaniel Hawthorne. In "Der große Karfunkel“ begeben sich sieben Abenteurer auf die Suche nach einem sagenumwobenen Edelstein und müssen dabei erfahren, dass das Lüften von Geheimnissen für jeden Einzelnen mit schicksalsträchtigen Konsequenzen verbunden ist. Die "Totenhochzeit" beweist, dass eine Ehe zum falschen Zeitpunkt zur Hölle auf Erden führen kann und im schlimmsten aller Fälle noch mit der Verdammnis der Ewigkeit versüßt wird.

Pubblicato nel 1850, "La lettera scarlatta" è uno dei più importanti romanzi nordamericani dell'Ottocento. Nelle intenzioni dell'autore esso doveva rappresentare al meglio lo spirito puritano dell'epoca coloniale americana. Nella società puritana la libertà dell'individuo coincideva con il bene della comunità, che doveva essere purificata da ogni elemento estraneo, considerato al soldo di Satana. Per questa ragione le autorità imponevano stili di vita improntati a un inflessibile rigore morale.

The Minister's Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne, first published in 1832, is a grim tale about Mr Hooper, a preacher, who starts wearing a veil over the upper part of his face. He first wore the veil while delivering a sermon on secret sin, and never removes it, despite the dismay of the congregation or the pleas of his fiancée, who leaves him. Mr Hooper develops into Father Hooper, a figure who makes converts of people who imagine themselves to also hide behind the veil.

The narrative of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown unfolds like a horror film, as the pious protagonist goes to an appointment in the woods near the town of Salem. The author’s use of tongue-in-cheek humor serves to intensify the ultimate horror of the story. One by one, a series of revelations shakes Brown to the core.

In The Wedding Knell, Mrs Dabney (a woman who married and was widowed twice) is going to be marrying Mr Ellenwood, a 65-year-old who had been attracted to Dabney in the past. When Mrs. Dabney enters the church for the wedding, the bell let out a deep knell, usually reserved for funerals. The bell continued to ring until the groom arrived. The groom arrived with a funeral precession, and claimed that Mrs Dabney's youth was given to other husbands, and he was forced to live an unhappy life because he couldn't have her.

"To inherit a great fortune. To inherit a great misfortune." These words, from Nathaniel Hawthorne's notebook, neatly encapsulate the theme of The House of the Seven Gables - that of a family whose fortunes are poisoned by its past misdeeds.
