Il Galateo overo de' costumi, fu scritto da Giovanni Della Casa tra il 1551 e il 1555 (pubblicato postumo nel 1558) ed è così celebre che in italiano con la parola galateo si definisce l'insieme di norme comportamentali con cui si identifica la buona educazione. Il titolo dell'opera proviene dal nome Galeazzo (in forma latinizzata Galatheus) Florimonte, vescovo di Sessa, che suggerì all’autore l’idea. Della Casa non vuole soffermarsi sulle grandi virtù, patrimonio di pochi, ma cercare di correggere i difetti più frequenti, indicando i comportamenti più consoni alle varie situazioni della quotidianità.
