Herzlich willkommen zu unserer gemeinsamen meditativ-spirituellen Reise auf dem Jakobsweg! Den Jakobsweg kennt jeder. Der Sage nach war im 9. Jahrhundert Bischof Theodemir der Erste, der von einem Eremiten unter Beobachtung der hellsten Sterne zur Grabstätte des Heiligen Jakobus geführt wurde. Der berühmteste Jakobsweg ist der Camino Frances, den auch wir für unsere Reise zum Ziel, Santiago de Compostela in Nordspanien, ausgewählt haben. Der Name Jakobsweg wurde nach Sankt Jakob, einem der 12 Apostel Jesu Christi, benannt.

Most come on a holiday for a few days, a week perhaps, maybe a little longer, but I longed for more (desiderio di più): more of the language, more of the culture, more of the people. Italians have a way of making something more exotic out of life, more adventurous, lovelier, and more relaxing. In Italy, to me, even hanging laundry is beautiful, as it stretches from end to end between buildings. As I take photos in this grand city, I try to capture the endless majesty of her churches, monuments, and people. It is becoming therapeutic.

Der Postillon schlief ein, und die Pferde liefen den schnellsten Trab bergunter, immer auf dem bekannten Wege fort; kamen sie an ein eben Fleck, so ging es desto langsamer. Der Führer wachte auf und trieb wieder an, und so kam ich sehr geschwind, zwischen hohen Felsen, an dem reißenden Etschfluss hinunter. Der Mond ging auf und beleuchtete ungeheuere Gegenstände. Einige Mühlen zwischen uralten Fichten über dem schäumenden Strom waren völlige Everdingen.

Heute begegnete mir ein angenehmes Abenteuer, welches mich wohl zu einigem Nachdenken bewegen konnte und des Erzählens wert ist. Eine Dame, die mich schon bei meinem ersten Aufenthalt vielfach begünstigt, ersuchte mich, abends Punkt fünf Uhr bei ihr einzutreffen: es wolle mich ein Engländer sprechen, der mir über meinen „Werther“ etwas zu sagen habe. Vor einem halben Jahre würde hierauf, und wäre sie mir doppelt wert gewesen, gewiss eine abschlägige Antwort erfolgt sein; aber daran, dass ich zusagte, konnte ich wohl merken, meine sizilianische Reise habe glücklich auf mich gewirkt, und ich versprach zu kommen.

Meine Reisegesellschaft, Männer und Frauen, ganz leidliche und natürliche Menschen, liegen noch alle schlafend in der Kajüte. Ich aber, in meinen Mantel gehüllt, blieb auf dem Verdeck die beiden Nächte. Nur gegen Morgen ward es kühl. Ich bin nun in den fünfundvierzigsten Grad wirklich eingetreten und wiederhole mein altes Lied: dem Landesbewohner wollt' ich alles lassen, wenn ich nur wie Dido so viel Klima mit Riemen umspannen könnte, um unsere Wohnungen damit einzufassen. Es ist denn doch ein ander Sein. Die Fahrt bei herrlichem Wetter war sehr angenehm, die Aus- und Ansichten einfach, aber anmutig.

Früh drei Uhr stahl ich mich aus Karlsbad, weil man mich sonst nicht fortgelassen hätte. Die Gesellschaft, die den achtundzwanzigsten August, meinen Geburtstag, auf eine sehr freundliche Weise feiern mochte, erwarb sich wohl dadurch ein Recht, mich festzuhalten; allein hier war nicht länger zu säumen. Ich warf mich ganz allein, nur einen Mantelsack und Dachsranzen aufpackend, in eine Postchaise und gelangte halb acht Uhr nach Zwota, an einem schönen stillen Nebelmorgen. Die oberen Wolken streifig und wollig, die untern schwer. Mir schienen das gute Anzeichen.

Das Amphitheater ist also das erste bedeutende Monument der alten Zeit, das ich sehe, und so gut erhalten! Als ich hineintrat, mehr noch aber, als ich oben auf dem Rande umherging, schien es mir seltsam, etwas Großes und doch eigentlich nichts zu sehen. Auch will es leer nicht gesehen sein, sondern ganz voll von Menschen, wie man es neuerer Zeit Joseph dem Zweiten und Pius dem Sechsten zu Ehren veranstaltet. Der Kaiser, der doch auch Menschenmassen vor Augen gewohnt war, soll darüber erstaunt sein.

Nicht wie bei dem letzten Abgange des Paketboots wehte diesmal ein förderlicher frischer Nordost, sondern leider von der Gegenseite ein lauer Südwest, der allerhinderlichste; und so erfuhren wir denn, wie der Seefahrer vom Eigensinne des Wetters und Windes abhängt. Ungeduldig verbrachten wir den Morgen bald am Ufer, bald im Kaffeehaus; endlich bestiegen wir zu Mittag das Schiff und genossen beim schönsten Wetter des herrlichsten Anblicks. Unfern vom Molo lag die Korvette vor Anker.
