Douglas Mawson, born in 1882 and knighted in 1914, was Australia’s greatest Antarctic explorer. The route takes her through the valleys and snowy mountain passes of Europe and India to the scorching deserts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the metal of her bicycle, Rozinante (named after Don Quixote's steed), becomes too hot to touch.

The Walker, the Driver, and Otto is the memoir of a year in the life of the Walker: Physical education teacher, masters record-holding swimmer, on a 1987-88 sabbatical to walk around the approximate perimeter of the U.S.; the Driver: Former teacher, writer, naturalist, artist, musician, composer, and support person for the Walker; and Otto: 1978 VW camper van, shelter, sanctuary, retreat, blind, study; formerly tested on an Alaskan roundabout.
