Story
You notice two things when you fish a river solo in a two-man canoe. The first is the lack of conversation. The second is the canoe's insistence on running the river backwards. When you sit on the rear slat, as you do when alone, the stern will swing around to the front, so that you progress downstream bass-ackward. You can fight the stern's inexorable desire to lead by paddling hard left and then hard right. What you can't do is fight the canoe and fish at the same time.

Story
Ed Van Put begins this important new book with the history of native brook trout and offers little-known details about their sizes, abundance, and demise from over-fishing, the growth of streamside industries, and the introduction of competitive species. He records the attempts to restore the depleted fishery by restocking streams with hatchery-bred trout, and then the introduction of rainbow trout from California and brown trout from Europe, and their impact upon Catskill trout fishing.

Story
Originally published in 1964, Fisherman's Fall brings a unique perspective to the world of fall fishing. In the preface, Robert L. Haig-Brown ruminates on the attempts to preserve the salmon and trout in the rivers of British Columbia. What we know could save them, yet what we do contradicts that knowledge. Gaining the knowledge in this book will help fishers learn the nature of the fish and might even inspire some to contribute to their preservation.

"As I sit quietly this evening in the Italian Alps, I know that in the morning, the sun will surely come streaming in again over those quiet waters, now some 6,000 miles and a lifetime away from me. Memories know no distance and I will miss Black Canyon. The mighty Willamette River will slip by and there will remain in its swirls and reflections the soft sepia toned images of all of my waters and the fragrance of dewy ferns on the canyon floor and a faint hope for tomorrow."

Story
Zane Grey, known mainly for his Western fiction and for his own personal adventures exploring the rugged West, was also a prolific fisherman. Once his income from the Westerns gave him free time to explore the world's oceans, he devoted an average of 300 days a year to fishing, according to his son Loren. Besides the waters of southern California, Florida, and Nova Scotia, he went deep-sea fishing off the coasts of Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti, with many return trips to his favorite spots. He pioneered the fishing of sailfish, and established numerous world records.

Story
In these stories, popular Chicago Tribune outdoor columnist Bill Stokes gives himself over to his true passion, trout fishing. It is an activity, possibly a madness, that moves him, time and again, to stand knee-deep in cold and murky waters, offer himself up to clouds of hungry mosquitoes, and attempt to keep from snagging his line in overhanging limbs while trying to outwit a wily rainbow or brook trout. And then remembering where the car is parked.
