Surat Al 'Imran (The House of Joachim) is the third surah of the Qur'an. In Islam, Imran is believed to be the father of Maryam (the mother of Jesus). The chapter is notable for attributing feminine origins to humankind. In addition to this, it states that some Quranic verses are allegorical and some are to be understood by others. It also features a disclaimer against misrepresenting the allegorical verses as factual and asserts that a special set of people, those firmly rooted in knowledge, are to be consulted. In this remarkable dialogue between Hidayat Inayat-Khan and Deepak Chopra, M.D., the wisdom of the Sufis is appraised. Hidayat defines the word Sufi as "wisdom and purity". Sahih Al Bukhari is one of the Kutub al-Sittah (six major hadith collections) of Sunni Islam, compiled by a Muslim scholar Muhammad al-Bukhari. It was completed around 846 CE/232 AH. Sunni Muslims view this as one of the two most trusted collections of hadith along with Sahih Muslim. The Arabic word sahih translates as "authentic" or "correct". Sahih al-Bukhari, together with Sahih Muslim, is known as the Sahihayn.

Al-Balki explains symptoms and treatments giving advice on preventive measures and how to return the body and soul to their natural healthy state. In doing so he displays a keen understanding of the human condition and the medical nature of the human emotional state. An astonishing feat given that many of the conditions he discusses were left largely unknown and untreated for centuries before being clinically defined as such, only as relatively recently as the 20th century.

Although there is now a plethora of books by and about Rumi, I thought it might be instructive to republish a small portion of Edward Henry Whinfield's English translation of Rumi's Persian masterpiece. I think it is vitally important in today's social climate to focus on those aspects of Islam which elevate humankind and I can think of no better place to start than with the Sufi mystics of Islam, of which Rumi is the most famous (and perhaps finest) example.
