In questa opera del 1884, il filosofo Herbert Spencer esprime il suo pensiero politico. La negazione di ogni interferenza dello Stato con la vita sociale (assistenzialismo, risoluzione conflitti sociali) fa di Spencer un sostenitore del liberalismo politico, anche se, contrariamente allo stereotipo che lo vede come un ultraconservatore, Spencer era simpatizzante delle istanze libertarie, anti-imperialista, anticoloniale, contrario alla schiavit in ogni sua forma, e sostenitore di un modello di produzione basato sulle cooperative piuttosto che sul lavoro salariato.

We are face to face with this great world, and our relations to it are manifold. One of these is the necessity we have to live, to till the soil, to gather food, to clothe ourselves, to get materials from nature. We are always making things that will satisfy our needs, always in touch with this great world through hunger and thirst. Then, we have our mind; and our mind seeks its own food. Whether self-knowledge is a decision to mature or even if it is a decision for us to be recognised by our environment, the variety of the subject-matter proposes introspections with a view to understanding. For there is a crucial distinction between what one knows and what one has established as a position. Led astray by formulas of improvement, human beings lose the strength of their established position. The established position is derived from the essence of their ETHOS and not from the achievement of expediencies for survival.
