Alexander the Great changed the world that he knew—but how he did it, and how much of his story is truth and how much is invented, is hard to tell. One of our most important sources for his achievements and personality is Plutarch's Life of Alexander, and this is the first detailed commentary on it for over fifty years, along with a thorough introduction and translation. It is a sister volume to the author's 2011 edition (also in the Clarendon Ancient History Series) of Plutarch's Caesar, the Life paired with Alexander in Plutarch's series of Parallel Lives.

The Discourses of Epictetus are a series of informal lectures by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus written down by his pupil Arrian around 108 AD. Four books out of an original eight are still extant. The philosophy of Epictetus is intensely practical.

Oft genannt – selten gelesen – nie gehört. Johann Gottlieb Fichtes Reden (1808) versuchen, ein Nationalgefühl zu wecken, und zielen auf die Gründung eines deutschen Nationalstaates, der die Nachfolge des erloschenen Heiligen Römischen Reiches antreten und sich von der französischen Herrschaft emanzipieren sollte. Er entwickelt gedanklich eine "Nationalerziehung“, welche "die Freiheit des Willens gänzlich vernichtet“, um den Einzelnen in ihrem Sinne zu formen. Es versteht sich, dass solche Reden heutzutage kontrovers beurteilt werden.

What’s the big idea? To Socrates, living according to his values was more important than life itself. Plato’s Apology is in three parts: Socrates’ personal defense in his trial for impiety and corrupting the young, his plea before being sentenced, and his address to the jurors after he was condemned to death.
