This is a perfect puzzle of a detective novel published in 1926. It contains speculation about Government officials, lawyers, and police. Even if you think you’ve worked out what is happening and your mind is switched on to this sort of novel, you will be very surprised at the ending!

Commander Walter Topham, assigned as an attaché in Japan, is requested by the Secretary of State to deliver a sealed secret document via the Berlin embassy en route to Japan. Alias the Lone Wolf, published in 1921, is the third in the 8-book series about a reformed French jewel thief, Michael Lanyard--the Lone Wolf. This story is set in the years after the Great War (World War I), and Lanyard has ended his connection to the British Secret Service. He is enjoying some leisure time in the south of France near an area called the Cévennes. He's using the name Andre Duchemin, which he used in the previous story.
