Mitt under en cocktailbjudning på skådespelaren Sir Charles Cartwrights stora gods faller en älskad kyrkoherde omkull. Det står snabbt klart att han är död, men orsaken framstår som dunkel. Jerry Burton återvänder från det stora kriget med lindriga skador, men hans psykiska hälsa är det sämre med.
