Now, nearly 100 years later, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator remains highly recommended for an understanding of investment. Lefevre’s trading advice and analyses of market price movements are as relevant today as in 1923.

What Is to Be Done? Burning Questions of Our Movement (1902) is a political pamphlet written by the Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin. Lenin contends that the working class will not become politically aware simply by struggling with employers over wages, hours and working conditions. He maintains that Marxists should form a political party of committed revolutionaries to spread Marxist political ideas among the workers.

Russell Conwell was an American Baptist minister, philanthropist, and founder and first president of the Temple University in Philadelphia. Chief amongst his groundbreaking lectures is "Acres of Diamonds", a lecture Conwell gave around the world a total of roughly 6,150 times before his death in 1925. "Acres of Diamonds" teaches us that all the means for success and fulfilment are within us or close at hand, and it teaches us how unwise it is to hold the belief that the "grass is greener on the other side"....

The Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State is an 1884 treatise by Friedrich Engels. The work is partially based on notes by Karl Marx to Lewis H. Morgan's book Ancient Society and is regarded as one of the first major works on family economics. Engels argued that the traditional monogamous household was a recent construct, closely bound up with capitalism. He called it a patriarchal system in which women were servants and claimed that communism would herald the dawn of communal living and a new sexual freedom. The role of the state would then become superfluous.

Vladimir Lenin’s 1916 essay "Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism", is a synthesis of Lenin's development of economic theories that Karl Marx formulated in Das Kapital. Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) was an American economist and sociologist. His most famous work, The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study of Institutions (1899), is a treatise on economics and a social critique of consumption and of consumerism, based on the social stratification of people and the division of labor. This work is in the tradition of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations and is rightly considered a classic of economic theory and social history.

The Principles of Scientific Management (1911) is a monograph published by Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915), a manufacturing manager, mechanical engineer, and management consultant. This work laid out Taylor's views on the principles of scientific management, or industrial-era organization and decision theory. The term scientific management refers to coordinating the enterprise for everyone's benefit including increased wages for laborers, often referred to as Taylor's Principles, or Taylorism.

The Economic Consequences of the Peace (1919) is a book written by the British economist John Maynard Keynes. After the First World War, Keynes attended the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 as a delegate of the British Treasury. In this book, he argued for a more generous peace, not out of a desire for justice or fairness - but for the sake of the economic well-being of all of Europe, including the Allied Powers, which the Treaty of Versailles would prevent.

Mary Prince's 1831 book is one of the earliest narratives that revealed the ugly facts about slavery in the West Indies. The book begins with a brief description of her childhood, before recounting her adult experiences as a slave. Her strong spirit enabled her to survive and to take up the abolitionist cause.

The Way to Wealth, an essay by Benjamin Franklin, is a collection of wisdom sayings and advice published in Poor Richard's Almanac from 1733-1758. These proverbs and sayings are woven into an ethical code advocating industry and frugality as a “way to wealth”, thereby securing personal virtue. It is presented as a speech given by Father Abraham to a group of people. Many of the phrases Father Abraham uses continue to be familiar today, such as "There are no gains, without pains", "One today is worth two tomorrows" and "Get what you can, and what you get, hold".

A Letter Concerning Toleration by John Locke was originally published in Latin in 1689. It was Locke's response to the problem of religion and government; he proposed religious toleration as the answer. For Locke, the only way a Church gains genuine converts is through persuasion, not violence.

In the speech, Engels claimed that the name of Marx would “endure through the ages, and so also will his work.” The book also includes a summary of all the contributions by Karl Marx in building the theory of Communism.

The book On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817) secured Ricardo's position among the prominent classical economists. Ricardo wanted to thoroughly examine rent, wages, and profit. He argues that land rent grows as population increases and presents the theory of comparative advantage, the theory that free trade between two or more countries can be mutually beneficial.
