The legends and fairy stories in this book belong to the Yoruba country of Southem Nigeria. They relate the adventures of men and animals, and try to explain the mysteries of nature - why women have long hair, how the leopard got his spots, and so forth. Most of them include very old songs, but these cannot here be given in full.

The author spent several years as an assistant district officer among the Yorubas in Nigeria, and was thus enabled to collect the folklore contained in this book from native sources. Betty Pacutho Udongo was an elected member of the Ugandan Parliament when she founded the Nebbi Standard Academy, a secondary school in Northern Uganda. The school was founded to serve the needs of students in the region, but quickly became much more when orphans from a nearby refugee camp started to arrive after receiving word that they would not be turned away.
