Dies Gedicht entstand im Jahre 1796, vermutlich auf Anregung Goethes „Der Mythus“, welcher ihm zu Grunde liegt, ist der Raub der Proserpina, der auch schon von mehreren Dichtern des Altertums besungen worden ist. Proserpina war die Tochter des Zeus und der Ceres. Als sie herangewachsen war, tanzte sie einst in den Reihen der von Pallas und Artemis angeführten Nymphen. Aber angelockt durch liebliche Blumen, die dem Boden entsprossen, entfernte sie sich mit einigen Gespielinnen, und zuletzt auch von diesen.

„Heimkehr“ entstand von 1823-24: Es geht wieder um Leidenschaft und unglückliche Liebe, aber auch um den Stellenwert solcher „Sentimente“. Das lyrische Ich kehrt nach unbestimmter Zeit in die Stadt am Meer zurück (Lübeck), in der einst sein Liebchen lebte, die nun ausgezogen oder sonst wie ungreifbar ist. Die Stadt ist für ihn nun leer, kalt, unwirklich und voll schmerzlicher Erinnerungen. Das lyrische Ich hat seine Geliebte wohl nur still und heimlich angebetet, ohne es ihr zu gestehen oder seine Liebe zu zeigen. Liebe ist am schönsten als Sehnsucht, als Verlangen und Schmachten, dessen Erfüllung nicht unbedingt erwünscht ist.

"Lieder" ist eine kleine Sammlung von Lyrik aus Heinrich Heines Feder. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Dichter, Schriftsteller und Journalisten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er war einer der letzten Vertreter und zugleich einer der Überwinder der Romantik.

Romanzen... diese Ausgabe kann ich dem überrheinischen Publikum nicht zuschicken, ohne sie mit freundlichsten Grüßen in ehrlichster Prosa zu begleiten. Ich weiß nicht, welches wunderliche Gefühl mich davon abhält, dergleichen Vorworte, wie es bei Gedichtsammlungen üblich ist, in schönen Rhythmen zu versifizieren. Seit einiger Zeit sträubt sich etwas in mir gegen alle gebundene Rede, und wie ich höre, regt sich bei manchen Zeitgenossen eine ähnliche Abneigung. Es will mich bedünken, als sei in schönen Versen allzu viel gelogen worden, und die Wahrheit scheue sich, in metrischen Gewanden zu erscheinen. – Heinrich Heine.
