The Winnowing-Fan by Laurence Binyon was the original book of poetry within which ‘For the Fallen’ first appeared. Now used in Remembrance Day services, it is today his most famous poem. This new edition of the book includes newspaper articles and reviews, which historically re-contextualise the poems. A brief introduction and annotations to individual poems clarify both period detail and Binyon’s biographical perspectives.

Für seine Ballade „Kassandra“ greift Schiller den Kassandra-Mythos aus dem antiken Epos Troja auf. Die Ballade enthält dem entsprechend viele Namen und Anspielungen aus der Troja und der antiken Götterwelt.

Die Kraniche des Ibykus ist eine Ballade von Friedrich Schiller aus dem Jahr 1797, die im 6. Jh. v. Chr. spielt. Die Ballade wurde erstmals in Schillers Musenalmanach für das Jahr 1798 herausgegeben. Die Ballade beruht, wie bei Schiller oft, auf einem tatsächlichen historischen Geschehen: der Ermordung des Dichters Ibykos.
