Nachdem Gottfried Keller durch Konfrontation mit der Realität zur Einsicht gelangte, dass der Beruf des Landschaftsmalers seiner Erwartungshaltung bezüglich eines regelmäßigen und sicheren Einkommens nicht genügte, ebnete eine Laune des Schicksals ihm einen anderen Lebensweg. Aus Langeweile schreibt Keller ein paar Verse, die überraschenderweise sogar veröffentlicht werden und zwar nicht im Eigenverlag. Ermutigt und beflügelt von seiner anscheinend vorhandenen literarischen Begabung erwacht der geisteswissenschaftliche Ehrgeiz in ihm, der schließlich in seinen prosaischen Fähigkeiten mündet.

Die tief reichende Freundschaft, in welcher die zwei bekanntesten Dichterfürsten aus deutschsprachigen Landen miteinander verbunden waren, begann laut einigen Quellen alles andere als günstig, da beim ersten Treffen der beiden Goethe Schiller weder erkannte noch diesem irgendwelche Beachtung schenkte. Das änderte sich mit der Zeit, nachdem sich Goethe näher über Schillers Werk informierte und beide in regen Gedankenaustausch traten, besonders in vorliegender Briefwechsel-Reihe.

Der unmögliche Fall, der so absurd klingt, dass er nur wahr sein kann. Ständige Geldnöte, Verurteilung zum Tode, mehrjährige Gefängnisstrafe in angeketteter Einzelhaft, Verbot des Aufenthalts in Moskau und in Sankt Petersburg, Spielsucht, um ein paar der Schwierigkeiten zu erwähnen, welche das Schicksal letztendlich zu Voraussetzungen umwandelte, die Dostojewski in die Lage versetzten zu einem Titanen der Welt-Literatur zu werden.

Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was the founder and editor of the influential New York Tribune, whose circulation was among the largest in the United States. On August 19, 1862, Greeley wrote an editorial titled “The Prayer of Twenty Millions"—referring to the number of Northerners loyal to the Union—which criticized Lincoln for his reluctance to use the powers Congress had given him to confiscate southern property, including slaves, in order to emancipate them. One of France's greatest writers, Voltaire was frequently persecuted for his ideas and as a result, spent time in the famed Bastille. He fled his native land for England in 1726, at which time he witnessed the differences between the two countries. His celebrated Letters on England was first published in that nation in 1733 and contained 24 succinct letters on subjects ranging from religion and politics, to trade, the arts, philosophy, and science.

Arbuthnot, from his deathbed, solemnly advised Pope to moderate his satire and expressed fear about the poet's personal safety from his numerous foes. Pope replied in a manly but self-defensive style. He is said at this time to have in his walks carried arms, and taken a large dog as a protector, but none of the purported enemies ever had the courage to attack him.
