Forfatteren og landsretssagføreren Knud Nordentoft (1895-1953) meldte sig ind i Danmarks Nationalsocialistiske Arbejderparti i 1940 og fik ansættelse som partifunktionær. I tre et halvt år skrev han en omfattende dagbog om livet blandt danske og tyske nazister, indtil han blev arresteret i majdagene i 1945. Knud Nordentoft skriver om det umulige samarbejde med besættelsesmyndighederne, om jødespørgsmålet, om sin frygt for kommunisterne og om sit håb om det tyske gengældelsesvåben, der kunne udslette England.

På sin 13 års fødselsdag fik Anne Frank en dagbog, som hun straks tog i brug. Det blev starten til denne gribende beretning om hendes families dagligdag i deres skjulested i "Baghuset" og deres frygt, angst og håb frem til august 1944, hvor familien blev angivet og deporteret.
