Oscar Wilde wurde am 16.10.1854 in Dublin geboren. Sein Vater war Arzt, seine Mutter Dichterin. Wilde studierte in Dublin und Oxford. Seit 1879 lebte er in London. 1895 wurde er vom Vater seines Freundes Lord Douglas wegen homosexueller Neigungen angezeigt und zu zwei Jahren Zuchthaus verurteilt. Wilde starb am 30.11.1900 verarmt in Paris.

Die Londoner Zeitung "The Daily Chronicle" hatte berichtet, ein Gefängnisaufseher sei entlassen worden, weil er einem hungrigen Kinde, das im Gefängnis eingesperrt war, ein paar Cakes zu essen gegeben habe. Darauf richtete O. W. folgenden Brief an den Herausgeber des Blattes.

Ein Glücksfall für die Historiker: Harry Graf Kessler (1868 - 1937) beschreibt das Zeitgeschehen der Jahres 1932. Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was the founder and editor of the influential New York Tribune, whose circulation was among the largest in the United States. On August 19, 1862, Greeley wrote an editorial titled “The Prayer of Twenty Millions"—referring to the number of Northerners loyal to the Union—which criticized Lincoln for his reluctance to use the powers Congress had given him to confiscate southern property, including slaves, in order to emancipate them. The following is President Abraham Lincoln's reply, published in the Daily National Intelligencer on August 23, 1862.

These letters were arranged in two volumes by Albert Bigelow Paine, Samuel L. Clemens's literary executor, as a supplement to Mark Twain, A Biography, which Paine wrote. They are, for the most part, every letter written by Clemens known to exist at the time of their publication in 1917. They begin with a fragment of a letter from teenaged Sam Clemens to his sister, Pamela, and conclude with a letter to his attorney two weeks before his death. These letters give us some degree of insight into the evolution of Twain's style of speech and prose over the period of his lifetime.

One of France's greatest writers, Voltaire was frequently persecuted for his ideas and as a result, spent time in the famed Bastille. He fled his native land for England in 1726, at which time he witnessed the differences between the two countries. His celebrated Letters on England was first published in that nation in 1733 and contained 24 succinct letters on subjects ranging from religion and politics, to trade, the arts, philosophy, and science.

This very clever and highly-polished epistle to Dr Arbuthnot (also entitled the "Prologue to the Satires"), who was suffering from terminal illness, dates from 1734. Arbuthnot, from his deathbed, solemnly advised Pope to moderate his satire and expressed fear about the poet's personal safety from his numerous foes. Pope replied in a manly but self-defensive style. He is said at this time to have in his walks carried arms, and taken a large dog as a protector, but none of the purported enemies ever had the courage to attack him.
