"Lettres à un jeune poète" regroupe les correspondances qu'échangèrent Rainer Maria Rilke et son élève Kappu entre 1903 et 1908. Rilke a alors 27 ans, mais sa démarche est tellement détachée des velléités d'un "jeune poète", qu'on le croirait déjà revenu d'une longue habitude. Aux envies d'honneur, il répond par la nécessité de créer. Il préconise la solitude et l'introspection et pose au jeune Kappu cette question essentielle : "devriez-vous mourir s'il vous était interdit d'écrire ?"

"L'intranquillité" de Fernando Pessoa met en scène les différents hétéronymes que l'auteur avait inventés pour se permettre des styles d'écriture divers, voire opposés. Ces personnages prennent une certaine consistance dans ce journal intime qui mêle réalité vécue et réalité littéraire. Caterina da Siena (1347-1380) fu dichiarata prima santa nel 1461 e poi Dottore della Chiesa nel 1970. È compatrona d'Italia e d'Europa. Caterina, pressoché analfabeta, veniva aiutata nelle sue opere di carità da un gruppo di uomini e donne, fratelli spirituali, detti la "Bella Brigata". A questi stessi dettava le sue lettere, spesso dettandole contemporaneamente a più "scrivani". Scrisse circa 380 lettere, durante gli ultimi dieci anni della sua vita.

Le "Lettere dal carcere" di Antonio Gramsci vennero pubblicate, su decisione di Togliatti, per la prima volta da Einaudi nel 1947 in una edizione costituita da 218 testi. Si trattava di una raccolta incompleta, che però per prima portava a conoscenza del grande pubblico l'opera di Gramsci. Il libro vinse il premio Viareggio di quell'anno. Nel 1965 uscì la nuova edizione Einaudi, a cura di Caprioglio e Fubini, con la pubblicazione di 428 testi. Le lettere hanno come destinatari principalmente i due nuclei familiari: la famiglia d'origine con la madre, Peppina Marcias, le sorelle, Teresina e Grazietta, e il fratello Carlo che vive a Milano e la famiglia acquisita, russa: la moglie Giulia Schucht, la cognata, Tatiana, i figli, Delio e Giuliano, e l'amico Piero Sraffa, professore di economia a Cambridge.
