Story0
Minot's Ledge lies off the coast of Cohasset and Scituate, Massachusetts. This ledge and neighboring rock outcrops were the scene of over 40 shipwrecks in the early and mid-1800s. The first lighthouse built on Minot's Ledge was an iron pile design—a spidery construction drilled with difficulty into the ledge. This first lighthouse was destroyed by a storm in under two years, killing two lighthouse keepers. The second, and current, lighthouse was built over five years, completed in 1860, and remains in service today. This book covers the marine history of the rocky coast, the tragedy of the ...

Story0
Of all the mass of Japanese literature, which lies before us as the result of nearly twelve centuries of book-making, the most important monument is the work entitled Kojiki (古事記) or Records of Ancient Matters, which was completed in A.D. 712. It is the most important because it has preserved for us more faithfully than any other book the mythology, the manners, the language, and the traditional history of Ancient Japan. E.M. Satow, in his paper on the "Revival of Pure Shintō," says: "The Emperor Tenmu (天武天皇), at what portion of his reign is not mentioned, lamenting that the ...

Leopold von Ranke was a German Lutheran historian and a founder of modern historical writing based on primary sources. This is a panoramic account of the reigns of the 16th century popes. Pope Clement VII's French alliance leads to the sack of Rome by imperial troops. Pope Paul III devotes his reign to the political aggrandizement of his grandsons, only to be betrayed by them in the end. The implacable inquisitor, Gian Pietro Carafa becomes Pope Paul IV, but in his hatred of Spain, he is willing to enlist the Protestants and even the Turks as allies. It was Ranke who coined the term ...

Story0
Ryder originally did a close to literal translation of this 4th or 5th century play by the poet Kalidasa. Quite unwieldly with 7 acts and over 40 characters. "This version of Shakuntala represents an earnest effort to adapt for modern purposes one of the world's dramatic masterpieces. Since Shakuntala is a true masterpiece, its spirit is thoroughly modern, in spite of the fifteen centuries that have passed since its first presentation in India. [Except for some minor changes described herein,] the matter of the play is that of Kalidasa's Shakuntala with a minimum of verbal alteration." - ...

Parallel Lives of the Noble Greeks and Romans is a series of biographies of famous men, arranged in tandem to illuminate their common moral virtues or failings. The surviving lives contain twenty-three pairs of biographies, each pair consisting of one Greek and one Roman, as well as four unpaired, single lives. Plutarch was not concerned with writing histories, as such, but in exploring the influence of character, good or bad, on the lives and destinies of famous men. The first pair of lives the Epaminondas-Scipio Africanus no longer exists, and many of the remaining lives are truncated, ...

In this volume I have tried to meet the wishes of the publishers, by explaining to those who are comparatively unfamiliar with classical antiquity the place which Caesar occupies in the history of the world. He was not the founder, much less was he the organizer of the Roman Empire; yet his life marks a great change in European History. - Summary Adapted from the Preface
