Im gutbürgerlichen Haushalt der Chindlers spielt man Klavier und geht sonntags in die Kirche. Es ist das Jahr 1914. Theodor Chindler, Abgeordneter der katholischen Zentrumspartei und Familienoberhaupt, macht Politik im Berliner Reichstag, während seine Söhne Ernst und Karl fürs Vaterland an die Front ziehen. Zu Hause diskutieren die anderen Familienmitglieder hitzig über den Kaiser, das Elend in den Lazaretten und den Seekrieg - und so brechen die politischen Überzeugungen auseinander.

Als sich der junge Palästinenser Midhat 1914 nach Montpellier einschifft, ist das der Aufbruch in eine strahlende Zukunft. Begierig wirft er sich in sein Medizinstudium, saugt die französische Kultur auf, verliebt sich in die emanzipierte Jeannette. Doch in den vom Krieg aufgeschreckten bürgerlichen Salons bleibt Midhat ein Fremder - und muss lernen, wie zerbrechlich alles ist: Aus Freunden werden Feinde, aus Liebe wird Verrat. Er flüchtet sich in das exzessive Treiben in Paris und von dort zurück in die väterliche Obhut nach Palästina.
