Smarting from her recently cancelled wedding and about to turn 40, Laurie Sassalyn returns to her Maine hometown of Calcasset to handle the estate of her great-aunt Dot, a spirited adventurer who lived to be 93. The wedding celebrations have brought fractured family together for the first time in years: there's Phoebe and her husband Michael, children in tow. The young and sensitive Rosie, with her new partner. Irene, Mary's ex-mother-in-law. Even Emma, Mary's eldest, is back for the wedding - despite being at odds with everyone else.

Ciara is mother to three ungrateful, entitled teenagers, is married to steady Martin, a man with hairy udders, and is grieving for her mum who now lives in the wardrobe in a cardboard box from the crematorium. She finds solace in her anonymous blog and in the daily chats she has with her mum's ashes (often the best conversations she has all day.) 

London, March 2020. Wendy's husband, Richard, is one of the early COVID casualties, and as the world hunkers down against the pandemic, Wendy and her two kids - home from university - lock down into their grief and remembrance. Except Wendy has this gnawing sensation, a tightness in her chest every time she thinks of Richard. He could be harsh, critical, belittling in front of others. But he did his best - didn't he? He looked after them, even if he did make all the decisions and laugh at her small ambitions. Even if he controlled everything in Wendy's so-called life.
